PROGRAM The Nomads of Northern India: At the Foot of the Himalayas Photo from Wild Fibers Magazine website Our very own, Will and Kate Taylor, took a trip of a lifetime with editor of Wild Fibers , Linda Cortright. While there, they met and stayed with a nomad family that raises goats for cashmere fiber,  and were able to explore areas of India that are truly off the grid. Will will talk about their adventures on driving over the highest navigable road as well as Linda's current drive to sustain and encourage viable cashmere production in the area. PROGRAM Charlene   Woodcock :  Jolom Mayaetik: Mayan weavers cooperative of Chiapas Charlene became interested in the Mexican state of Chiapas in the 90s, having heard stories about it from an anthropologist friend and read the novels of B. Traven set in Chiapas early in the 20th century.  The Zapatista uprising of 1994 and a video of Mayan women marching on International Women’s Day in their beautiful traditional clothing convinced her to make her first trip there in 2000. At that time she met the weavers of the Mayan cooperative Jolom Mayaetik and has since returned each year to work with them as a volunteer in expanding the markets for their weavings.  The autonomous cooperative was established by the weavers in 1996.  Their weavings are done on backstrap looms and use designs inherited over the centuries.  She will be bringing samples of their weavings to the meetings. Once again,  meeting is on a Tuesday rather than our usual Wednesday. Mark your calendar. PROGRAM: AN EVENING WITH ROY CLEMES ABOUT CARDING ON OUR ELECTRIC CARDERS Roy will bring one or two carders and we will have our two there so there will be plenty of opportunity for hands on carding! Treadles' blending board will also be there.  Roy suggested that a call be put out to anyone who has clean fiber they want to test out to bring it and he can talk through the difference between, say, longwool and merino, or whatever. We will probably skip sharing to give more time on the carders, so save what you have for February. This is a good reminder that the guild has two Clemes & Clemes electric carders that are new and work beautifully. This meeting will give you a chance to see how they work so that you will have the confidence to use them on their own. Joan Anderson gave a report on CNCH 2017 meeting at Asilomar. Registration is open and many classes have filled. There are a few open classes, one involving spinning.  She announced that the 2018 Area 4 Conference will be cancelled due to the HGA national meeting [ CONVERGENCE ]  being scheduled in Reno in July, 2018.
